Introduction: The Question That Says Everything
“How do I unlock premium markets?”
During my last training with poultry farmers online, a question was posed:
“How do I unlock premium markets?”
It sounds like a simple question.
But in reality, it reveals one of the biggest challenges facing poultry farmers across Africa today.
Because most farmers are not struggling to raise chickens.
They are struggling to sell profitably.
The Hidden Problem in Poultry Farming
Let’s be honest.
Many poultry farmers are doing the right things:
- Building proper poultry housing
- Buying quality day-old chicks
- Managing feed and bird health
- Following basic biosecurity practices
Yet, at the end of the production cycle, the story changes.
When it’s time to sell:
- They depend on the same middlemen
- They accept whatever price is offered
- They struggle to recover costs, let alone make profit
So the question becomes:
Why are hardworking poultry farmers still not making money?

The Real Issue: Market Access, Not Production
The problem is not production.
The real issue is market access and positioning.
Most poultry farmers are locked into local markets, where:
- Prices are dictated, not negotiated
- Demand is unpredictable
- Information is controlled by traders
- Farmers have little bargaining power
This creates a vicious cycle:
Produce → Depend on middlemen → Accept low prices → Struggle financially → Repeat
Even when farmers increase production, they simply increase exposure to the same broken system.
Why Middlemen Control Poultry Prices
Let’s be clear—middlemen are not the enemy.
They exist because they solve real problems:
- Aggregation (buying from multiple small farmers)
- Transportation
- Market access
- Cash flow
However, the imbalance happens when:
- Farmers rely on them completely
- Farmers lack direct access to buyers
- Farmers do not understand market pricing
This is where control shifts.
👉 The person who controls the market… controls the price.
The Shift: From Poultry Farming to Poultry Business
To break out of this cycle, farmers must shift their mindset:
From production-focused → to market-driven.
Successful poultry entrepreneurs think differently.
They ask:
- Who are the high-value buyers in my area?
- What do premium customers actually want?
- How can I position my farm to meet those standards?
What Are Premium Poultry Markets?
Premium markets are buyers willing to pay higher and more stable prices because they value:
- Consistent supply
- Quality and bird weight standards
- Hygiene and food safety
- Reliability
Examples include:
- Hotels and restaurants
- Supermarkets
- Poultry processors
- Bulk buyers and distributors
These markets don’t just buy chickens.
They buy trust, consistency, and professionalism.
How Farmers Can Start Unlocking Premium Markets
This doesn’t require a miracle. It requires strategy.
Here are practical steps:
1. Improve Consistency, Not Just Production
Premium buyers don’t want “sometimes good” supply.
They want predictable quality and quantity.
2. Build Direct Relationships
Stop waiting for buyers to come to you.
Reach out to:
- Local restaurants
- Hotels
- Frozen food businesses
Introduce your farm as a reliable supplier.
3. Understand Pricing Dynamics
Know:
- Your cost of production
- Market price trends
- Seasonal demand patterns
This gives you negotiation power.
4. Brand Your Farm
Even at a small scale, branding matters.
- Give your farm a name
- Be known for something (quality, size, hygiene)
- Build trust over time
5. Reduce Overdependence on Middlemen
You don’t have to eliminate them completely.
But you must:
👉 Create alternative sales channels
The Bigger Opportunity
Africa’s demand for poultry is growing rapidly.
Urbanization, population growth, and changing diets are creating massive opportunities.
But only farmers who understand:
- Demand
- Supply
- Pricing
- Market systems
…will truly benefit.
Final Thoughts
Poultry farming can be profitable.
But only when farmers move beyond production and start thinking like agribusiness owners.
The goal is not just to raise birds.
The goal is to:
👉 Control your market
👉 Improve your pricing power
👉 Build a sustainable poultry business
